How’s this for an innovative startup: four African girls — the eldest of which is justfifteen years old— have worked together to invent a generator that’s powered by urine. The group presented their creation at this year’sMaker Faire Africa, and it’s so freaking brilliant it makes me want travel back in time and punch 15-year-old me right in the solar plexus.
The Next Weblays out how it works:
- Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, whichcracks the ureainto nitrogen, water, and hydrogen.
- The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
- The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
- This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
1 Liter of urine gives you 6 hours of electricity.Here’s hoping these girls can get the funding they need to take this idea to new heights. Even if they don’t, we’ve got a feeling they’re going places.

And then an old acquaintance tells you something that you really needed to hear. And it makes you think. And as it settles into your mind and the flattery starts to fade away you realize that it is starting to hurt. Because he’s not the one that you want to say those things and think those things. And you start to wonder if those things are all anyone will ever see about you….. and then you remember he saw the other stuff too. But it’s easier to forget that part. Why is it that the compliments about who you are don’t linger as long as the ones about what you are? But the who part, it sinks deeper. That is what is starting to hurt. It’s those comments that remind you of your worth and to not settle for the compliments that only mention what you are.
And then I think of him….
In fact, I want to tell the modern man that he doesn’t have to look like a gold rush-era carnival worker or brew his own micro whatever to be considered a man in my eyes. No, it’s way easier than that. How about being a good guy, a good person. Just be honest, kind, tolerant, open, intrepid, self-aware, inquisitive, etc. — you know, all the things that have made our greatest men (and greatest anyone) great when we boil it down. Do these things and help others do them too, and you’re a real man as far as I’m concerned. Next time you’re out and about, walking tall, everyone might be focusing on the perfectly handrolled cigarette dangling effortlessly from your lips, but you and I will know the truth — you called your Mom just to tell her you love her, and you’re happy you did.
Oh yeah, and get a bunch of tattoos.
